The gorge, often referred to as “The Valley of Apes,” is an iconic place filled with primates, butterflies, and rare flora. Listening to the distant chimp calls through the forest canopy is a thrilling experience.
Visit to the Katwe Salt Lake
Have a look at the salt mining practices from the bygone days that the local people at Lake Katwe are still using. This culture visit gives an interesting insight into how the local people have managed to live and work with nature sustainably, drawing salt from the lake’s mineral-rich waters.
Ishasha Sector Tree-Climbing Lions (Optional)
It is possible that you will see that southern region of the park, Ishasha Sector, well-known for its unique breed of arachnids that are capable of climbing trees, lions in particular. Observing the kingly cats dozing off on branches of fig trees is one of the rare wildlife sights in Africa.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive – Afternoon Boat Cruise on Kazinga Channel

The wild signals the arrival of a cool morning breeze and meal. After an early bird, get ready for a Kasenyi Plains morning drive. The golden savannah becomes a whole different world under the first rays of the sun thus excellent for photography.
You will be following the actions of lions your skilled guide is helping. Spot elephants and buffaloes, and enjoy the sight of Uganda kob looking so elegant as it grazes. The abundance of wildlife has made it one of the best spots for game viewing in East Africa.
You go back to the lodge for lunch and a small rest before going out for the boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel in the afternoon. The two-hour cruise is a glittering experience – every sound and color coming in layers as the hippos grunt, the elephants are bathing, and the birds over water are singing. The channel is full of life, thus a perfect setting for wildlife photography to capture it closely.
You can then after the cruise relax at the lodge, have dinner and tell each other stories around the campfire under a starlit sky.
Day 3: Chimpanzee Tracking in Kyambura Gorge – Visit Katwe Salt Lake
After breakfast, you travel to Kyambura Gorge which is also referred to as “Valley of Apes”. The dense rainforest located between the savannah plains is the home of one small but flourishing population of chimpanzees. Ranger will be by your side when you go down the gorge for tracking these intelligent primates.
The journey through the covered area can take from 2 to 4 hours based on the chimps’ movement but it is so much worth it. Imagine seeing them swinging in the trees, eating, and playing amongst one another in their natural home.
The rest of the day is spent at Katwe Salt Lake where you will get a cultural visit in the village where local people work in the salt mining area and teach you about traditional salt extraction methods that have sustained the community for generations.
Be back at the lodge for a relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 4: Ishasha Sector Game Drive – Return to Kampala
Once you have had breakfast, checked out, and taken a drive to Ishasha Sector that is world-famous because of its lions that climb trees. Be attentive and get ready with your camera as the view of these royal cats lying on branches is really breathtaking.
