Detailed Itinerary Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Transfer to Kasese The arrival at the Entebbe International Airport will be welcomed by a safari guide who then proceeds with a transfer to Kasese-a gateway to the Rwenzori Mountains. This scenic drive takes you past tea plantations and lush rolling hills of western Uganda. Dinner and overnight stay at Equator Snow Lodge or Sandton Hotel Kasese. Day 2: Nyakalengija (1,646m) – Nyabitaba Hut (2,652m) Breakfast at this time, meet your mountain guide for briefing and equipment check. Walk through the rainforest with vistas of the Mubuku River, colobus monkeys, and many colorful birds. The ascent continues on to Nyabitaba Hut for dinner and overnight. Around 5 to 6 hours is the duration of the trek. Day 3: Nyabitaba – John Matte Hut 3,505m Descend towards the Bujuku River, then ascent through bamboo forest and mossy slopes. The path gets steeper while entering the heather zone with giant tree heathers. Arrive at John Matte Hut full view of the gorgeous Bujuku Valley. Approx. 6–7 hours of hiking. Day 4: John Matte – Bujuku Hut (3,962m) Negotiates Lower Bigo Bog wooden walkways and Ultimate Bigo Bog. Gaze upon massive lobelias and groundsels. Onwards to Bujuku Hut on the shores of Lake Bujuku surrounded by towering summits of Mount Baker and Mount Speke. Day 5: Bujuku – Elena Hut (4,541m) This ascent today is a bit tougher. Climb through the steep slopes of Upper Bigo Bog and get into the alpine zone of moss and rocks. As you approach Elena Hut, the base camp for Margherita, the air begins to thin. Dinner and overnight at Elena Hut. Day 6: Summit Marghertta Peak (5,109m) – Kitandara Hut (4,023m) Start just before dawn for the summit attempt. Cross Stanley Glacier and with ropes and crampons on, finish the final push to Margherita Peak. Being on top of Africa’s third highest peak is a moment of glory and one can enjoy vast views of Congo and Uganda. Descend to Kitandara Hut for overnight comfort. Total trekking time: 8-10 hours. Day 7: Kitandara – Guy Yeoman Hut (3,261m) After breakfast, head up to Freshfield Pass (4,282m) for stellar views of the Rwenzori ranges before descending along rocky terrain and boggy ground to Guy Yeoman Hut. Wonderful sections for photo stops also provide chances to spot Rwenzori turacos. Day 8: Guy Yeoman – Nyakalengija – Kasese It is all downhill in the bamboo forest and lush vegetation zones toward Nyabitaba and then Nyakalengija. Celebrate your accomplishment at the base before being transferred to your lodge in Kasese for a hot shower, some relaxation, and dinner.
