9 Days in Rwenzori: Hiking Safari to Conquer the Mountains of the Moon The once-in-a-lifetime adventure through the legendary Rwenzori Mountains, also referred to as the Mountains of the Moon. A 9-day hiking Safari in Rwenzori takes hikers deep into one of Africa’s most dramatic landscapes — lush with rainforests, giant lobelias, glacial summits, and misty valleys. Stretching along Uganda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Rwenzori Mountain range is Africa’s third-highest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site for their magnificent beauty and difficult trails. A journey through multiple climate zones: from tropical forests full of wildlife to icy snow-capped summits-an unparalleled African hiking experience. It is beyond physical challenge: every step leads you higher into the clouds, contributing to a serene atmosphere of perhaps the cleanest ecosystem on Earth. Tours and Experience Designed for intrepid travelers wishing to explore beyond the ordinary, Rwenzori Hiking Safari can be more than just walking-it’s a wilderness and cultural immersion. Trekkers are always accompanied by skilled local mountaineers who impart great knowledge of the geography, plants, and wildlife. The walk follows the Central Circuit Trail — the most scenic and worthwhile route — leading to Margherita Peak (5,109 m) on Mount Stanley, the highest point in Uganda. There are glacial rivers to cross, stretching views all the way to the Congo Basin, and the stay also involves some great moments of cultural interaction among the Bakonzo people whose traditions evolved in the shadow of the towering mountains. Accommodation Along the way, accommodation is provided in well-kept mountain huts managed by the Rwenzori Mountaineering Services (RMS). The huts provide almost comfortable accommodation, consisting of bunk beds, mattresses, and food prepared by the mountain crew, for the nights. While in Kasese or Nyakalengija, the base of the mountain, feel free to stay in some comfortable lodges, such as Ruboni Community Camp, Equator Snow Lodge, or Rwenzori Base Camp Guesthouse, complete with hot showers and views of the ranges for after-and-pre-hike relaxation. Highlights Trek through five different vegetation zones – from tropical forest to alpine glaciers. Stand on the famous Margherita Peak, the third highest point in Africa. The rare flora to discover include giant lobelias and everlasting flowers. Chameleons, Rwenzori turacos, and monkeys are some common fauna to watch out for. Enjoy the Bakonzo hospitality and friendliness. From misty valleys to glacial lakes, the photo opportunities are truly extraordinary.
