First stop Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its rugged terrain and the world’s largest population of mountain gorillas. After an exhilarating trek, you will be rewarded with close encounters with these gentle giants. After that, you will be taken through Rwanda where the challenge of ascending Mount Karisimbi awaits you. A two-day hike through this region, filled with views of the Virunga mountains, valleys, and forests, will not let you go without the breathtaking experience of highlands.
The whole journey will be accompanied by an experienced ranger and a local expert who will add to your understanding through their stories of conservation, culture, and mountain ecology.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer from Kigali to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (Uganda)
Commencing your journey in the Rwanda’s radiating and urban Kigali, picture-perfect capital city. After a warm welcoming and briefing, you will be off to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest—the end of the scenic 5-hour trip through the rolling green hills, terraced farms, and beautiful edges of the hills. You will cross the Ugandan border at either the Cyanika or Gatuna posts. Check into your lodge, which is located at the forest edge, once you get there. In the evening, you may relax and listen to nature or do a guided tour to the nearby village where you would meet the Batwa community, one of the oldest tribes in Africa.
Dinner and overnight stay at Buhoma Lodge or similar.
Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Forest – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda)
Early in the morning, you are going to have a nice breakfast and then give a visit to the park rangers at the gorilla trekking headquarters for a briefing on the rules and the groups. Accompanied by professional rangers, you will do a deep search in the foggy forest to find one of the gorilla families. The trek may take between 2-6 hours, according to the gorillas’ location. Once you are with them, you will receive your hour of eternity watching, with stunned eyes, the playful behaviors, gentle interactions, and human-like emotions — a life-changing experience.
Once back at your lodge, take lunch and then head towards the border with Rwanda, passing through Cyanika and then towards Volcanoes National Park in Musanze. Take in the marvelous view of the Virunga volcanoes that stretch across the skyline.

Day 3: Mt. Karisimbi Hiking – Climb to Base Camp
Transfer to the park office after breakfast for registration and to meet your hiking team. The hike to Karisimbi starts at about 2,400 meters and slowly climbs past areas of dense bamboo and then of Hagenia trees. You might see golden monkeys and other forest creatures and also be amazed by the lovely flora during your climb. It will take you about 6 hours to reach the base camp set at approximately 3,700 meters where you will erect a tent and stay overnight under the stars. At sunset, breathe the fresh mountain air and feel the subtle presence of the Virunga wilderness.

Day 4: Summit Mount Karisimbi – Descend and Return to Kigali
Rising early, you will make the strenuous final push up to Karisimbi’s summit (4,507 meters). While the sun rises, the mist dissipates letting the revealing the extraordinary view of the Virunga Volcanoes — Bisoke, Mikeno, Nyiragongo, and Nyamuragira — and the lush valleys below. That will be the most astonishing reward for your endurance. You will have a very short time on the peak to take pictures and enjoy the view before going back down.
After descending spend time in Musanze for lunch before going back to Kigali. Depending on your schedule, you might visit either the Kigali Genocide Memorial or local markets before your flight or rest at night.
