Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Transfer to Gisenyi

Your adventure begins in Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, famed for its cleanliness and rolling hills. Upon arrival, you will be met and received by your guide who will briefing you about the safari. Depending on your arrival times, you may be whisked away to a city tour that includes the Kigali Genocide Memorial, craft markets, or the bustling Nyamirambo area.

Near midday, drive to Gisenyi, a charming town sitting on the calm shores of Lake Kivu. This scenic trip takes between three and four hours. The road passes through Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills.” At Gisenyi, chill on your lodge verandah or stroll along the beach while witnessing the fading light from a sunset boat ride. Overnight at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel or similar.

Day 2: Cross over to Goma for Gorilla Trekking in Virunga National Park

After breakfast, transfer to the border between Rwanda and DRC at Gisenyi/Goma. After immigration formalities, proceed to the Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In the presence of park rangers, you will be thoroughly briefed before proceeding with the gorilla trek, which will take between 2 and 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family. The walk will take you through dense rainforest, bamboo stands, and volcano terrain. Thereafter, you will spend an adrenalin-charged hour with the gorillas.

After the trek, return to your lodge for relaxation and dinner. At Kibumba Tented Camp or Mikeno Lodge, the sounds of the forest will serenade you to sleep.

Day 3: Nyiragongo Volcano Hike—Overnight at the Summit

Early rise and breakfast, then transfer to Kibati Ranger Post, where the Nyiragongo hike begins. At 10:00 am, commence ascending with armed rangers and porters, if hired.

Four to six hours for a walk is approximately the duration of the ascent with breaks at prearranged points. The path traverses through verdant lower forests, lava fields, and alpine meadows before finally reaching the rim. The views, of course, are worthy of all praise—an up-close gaze at the largest lava lake in the world.

By night, the red-hot lava lake glows exceptionally with all fiery shades of red and orange lighting up the skies. Basic summit shelters await you for your overnight stay where you shall be warmed by the occasional breathtaking view of the volcano – definitely one of the most surreal experiences in adventure travel.

Day 4: Nyiragongo Descent–Kigali Transfer

It is sunrise, and the sky is aflame; admire the sunrise over Virunga National Park while slowly beginning your descent to Kibati. The descent is four hours long. From the base, a driver will meet you for the transfer to Goma, from where you will be crossing back to Rwanda. Depending on your itinerary, enjoy a nice lunch in Gisenyi before driving back to Kigali.

You can be dropped back at you hotel or directly at the airport for your onward flight.
